Category: Stories

With 2020 upon us, make sure to plan a visit to San Diego’s Little Italy to take part in the neighborhood’s wildly popular annual events. Among our 48-square blocks, there is always something cultural and festive to do that brings the community together. Now is the time to mark your calendars for these can’t-miss events to create one-of-a-kind experiences and lasting memories across the first part of the year.

Spend Wednesday mornings strolling through our newest year-round farmers’ market, the Little Italy Wednesday Market. Similar to the treasured Little Italy Mercato, the Wednesday market stretches across two blocks from India to State Streets offering endless options of farm fresh produce, pastured eggs, poultry, fish and much more! The Wednesday Market not only provides locals with another opportunity to shop and support local farmers and artisans, but also features live entertainment to complement the Italian ambiance of the Piazza della Famiglia.

Spring ahead into April and start planning for the 12th Annual Gran Fondo. As San Diego’s favorite cycling event, the grand ride will begin on Sunday, April 5th. Open to cyclists of all levels, the Gran Fondo will include a beautiful ride along the picturesque waterfront, challenging cyclers with four route options and a timed King and Queen of the Mountains competition. There will also be a Bike & Fitness Expo the day before featuring guest speakers, raffles and health and fitness clinics. At the finish line, cyclists will be awarded with a big Italian feast.

Another event to look out for at the end of April is the 36th annual Mission Fed ArtWalk. On April 25th and April 26th, thousands of attendees will travel to experience Southern California’s largest and longest running arts festival. The free event spans across 16 blocks featuring more than 350 local and international artists, live music, dance performances, street food and interactive art experiences for all ages to enjoy.

Fast-forward to Little Italy’s first summer event with the annual Taste of Little Italy on June 17th. Once a year, food lovers get to relish in delicious samplings from the neighborhood’s renowned eateries while listening to live music and taking in the spectacular views of the San Diego Bay. Taste of Little Italy ticket holders will have the option to choose between the North Route or South Route, each offering different restaurants and bites to indulge in. This is the year’s one opportunity to taste all of Little Italy in one night!
