Washington Elementary School

The Gem of Little Italy since 1915

Washington Elementary School is the oldest elementary school in Downtown San Diego. The original building, that educated and raised the children of Little Italy, back in the 50′s and 60′s, was a beautiful piece of architecture.  Unfortunately in the late 1970′s, the San Diego School District had concern that the building was not earthquake safe; so the building was demolished and the current school building was erected.

The current Principal, Janie Wardlow, and her staff have morphed Little Italy’s, once tradtional education institution, into a school with international programming that rivals private education. Children, from Kinder to 5th grade, can partake in language classes, including Italian, ballroom dancing and many other fun-filled activities that build strong future leaders and well-rounded children.
