Washington Elementary S.T.E.A.M. School

The Gem of Little Italy since 1915

Washington Elementary School is the oldest elementary school in Downtown San Diego. The original building, that educated and raised the children of Little Italy, back in the 50′s and 60′s, was a beautiful piece of architecture.  Unfortunately in the late 1970′s, the San Diego School District had concern that the building was not earthquake safe; so the building was demolished and the current school building was erected.

The new building was constructed in the 1980’s and includes the surrounding parks and recreation areas shared with the community.  Children at Washington currently receive instruction in the core subject areas as well as; music, chorus, art, dance, Spanish, or Italian.  While we are proud of our little school and we mean to make it better.

Through the generous donations from the Little Italy Association, the Italian Embassy, the Washington Elementary Foundation our P.T.O. and the STEAM magnet grant we are proud to offer a stellar curriculum unrivaled in San Diego.

The new Principal, David Crum, has almost 30 years of experience in four countries and four Districts, in both private and public educational settings. Together with the staff he is forming a new school around STEAM (Science Technology Engineering, Arts and Math) with a large grant from the Federal government and in collaboration with San Diego State G.A.T.E. Department, the District Magnet Department and the University of San Diego Department of Education.

Our vision is to be an academy focused on student learning, to foster, in all students, the critical-thinking, leadership and academic skills that are necessary for succeeding in a global society.  Our curriculum planning is designed to enhance and grow student’s talents, abilities and gifts through rigorous work while meeting their social and emotional needs.  Each classroom will be multi-tiered to give each child individual learning opportunities, resources and experiences which promote individual student talents and interests to provide for self-fulfillment, creativity, and responsible participation in our society.
