In
early December, Greg Maslak, President of the newly formed
Washington Elementary School PTA, appealed to the Little Italy
Board of Directors to raise between $700.00 - $800.00 for
school uniforms. Certain families at the school, especially,
in light of the September 11th catastrophe, have fallen on
hard times and have not been able to provide their children
with the required school uniforms. In addition, the
safety patrol officers have not had new uniforms in almost
eight years. At the December Board meeting, Little Italy
President, Marco Li Mandri contributed the first hundred dollars
for the school uniforms. Over the past month the generosity
of this community has yielded a surplus of funds for this
effort. We have not only met our goal, but now have
a reserve for uniforms more kids.
The Association's Board also voted to investigate the creation
of a Washington School Foundation to help build this school
into one of the finest in the city. Hopefully the Foundation
will be formed by this summer in time for the next school
year.
