The community helps

Dear little Italy assn.,

WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY

(Letters to the editor)

In early December, Greg Maslak, President of the newly formed Washington Elementary School PTA, appealed to the Little Italy Board of Directors to raise between $700.00 - $800.00 for school uniforms.  Certain families at the school, especially, in light of the September 11th catastrophe, have fallen on hard times and have not been able to provide their children with the required school uniforms.  In addition, the safety patrol officers have not had new uniforms in almost eight years.  At the December Board meeting, Little Italy President, Marco Li Mandri contributed the first hundred dollars for the school uniforms.  Over the past month the generosity of this community has yielded a surplus of funds for this effort.  We have not only met our goal, but now have a reserve for uniforms more kids.

The Association's Board also voted to investigate the creation of a Washington School Foundation to help build this school into one of the finest in the city.  Hopefully the Foundation will be formed by this summer in time for the next school year.

Special thanks to the following Board members and Little Italy businesses for their generous contributions to this effort:

Twyla Cecil of Cecil's House of Photography gave $100.00.

Steve Galasso of Caffe Italia gave $100.00

Fr. Steve Grancini of Our Lady of the Rosary gave $200.00

Francine Phillips of Byron Wear's Office gave $25.00

Deborah Scott of Indigo Grill gave $100.00

Frank Stiriti of Vulcan Steam & Sauna gave $250.00

Dear Prudence gave $25.00

Marco Li Mandri of New City America, Inc. gave $100.00

Larry Kuntz of Nelson Photo Supplies gave $100.00

Domenic Brunetto of Mona Lisa gave $100.00

Nancy Nichols of The
Waterfront
gave $100.00

We have raised a grand total of $1,200.00 and are still looking to raise more for the children of Washington Elementary.  For more information please contact the Little Italy Association office at 619-233-3898.
