"Little Italy way" on its way...

The Little Italy Association has submitted an application to the City of San Diego requesting changing Hawthorne Street to Little Italy Way. The street will be changed from the freeway off ramp to Harbor Drive. The Association is requesting the name change

as a tribute to the historic Little Italy and to the many immigrants that created this great community. Little Italy today represents one of Downtown San Diego's oldest continuous neighborhood business districts. At one time, more than 6,000  families lived in Little Italy

and toiled to build San Diego into the center of the world tuna industry.

With the decline of the tuna industry on the West Coast and the destruction of 35% of Little Italy due to the construction of Interstate 5, Little Italy suffered nearly thirty years of decline. In the early 1990's, this area was known as Harborview and when the Little Italy Association Business Improvement District was established its first goal was to have this area identified as "Little Italy" again. After seven years of working together LIA and the community have accom

plished that goal.
We believe that the changing of Hawthorne to "Little Italy Way" will pay tribute to this historic, vibrant  community of Downtown. It will also be descriptive of the area as people are entering the North Embarcadero and San Diego waterfront. We anticipate the name change to occur by May of this year.
