In honor of. . .
Message from the CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, Steven J. Galasso

As you can see in the drawing above, the Little Italy Association is embarking on perhaps its most important project yet - the creation of a fountain and piazza which will serve as a memorial to all of the young men who left for war over the years from their homes in Little Italy.  In particular this tribute is to the young men who never came back home, but in general, it is to all veterans who were raised in Little Italy over the last 100 years, and thank God, returned home safely.

This issue of the Little Italy Association newsletter

represents a tribute of sorts.  It is a tribute to those men and women, of all nationalities, who were murdered in the horrific events of September 11th.   It is a tribute to the fire fighters, the police officers, the emergency medical techs, the pilots and the New York Port Authority employees whose outstanding and selfless work saved tens of thousands of lives.

It is a tribute to the many, many families in Little Italy who have owned property for generations, run businesses, raised their children in this neighborhood and stayed around to

help the revitalization and renewal of our community.

It is a tribute to all of the business owners and new residents who, with their risk and life savings, have invested in the future of this community to create a great balance between social and commercial life.

It is a tribute to our Board of Directors, who spend countless hours in the Board meetings and committee meetings to develop well thought out plans for this community.  Their efforts are forging this once forgotten part of Downtown into one of the most dynamic urban communi

ties in Southern California.  Their desire to set destiny is based upon trial and error, based upon risk and based most importantly on social service.

Most importantly, this is a tribute to all in the Little Italy community, without whom none of our work would be possible.  As we enter this second year of the new century, I ask that we re-double our efforts and continue our work as an ongoing and living tribute to this historic community we call San Diego's Little Italy.

Felice Anno Nuovo
