Re: The Little Italy Festa’s Gesso Italiano (Italian Chalk): Chalk Painting Event
Dear Gesso Artist,
You are cordially invited to be an artist in the Little Italy Festa’s Gesso Italiano: Chalk Painting Event. For those of you who have not participated in a street painting event in San Diego’s Little Italy before, Gesso Italiano is a part of a larger festival called the Little Italy Festa. Over the past 14 years, it has grown so that we now draw over 120,000 attendees from all over the United States on Sunday alone. This year’s dates for Gesso Italiano are October 11th and 12th from 10:00am to 6:00pm. Gesso Italiano is a stand-alone event on Saturday, and on Sunday, Festa and Gesso Italiano take place simultaneously in artsy and scenic Little Italy.
Last year the Little Italy Association decided to manage Gesso Italiano in-house and to go towards a new direction, a celebration of the traditional art of the old world. With a push to take the festival back to its original roots of the Madonnari in Italy, we are requesting that all artists create an Italian themed rendition. We welcome your creative interpretations…from a rendition of the works of an Italian master, Italian scenery or an image of an Italian person that has contributed their skills in acting, singing, art or science…the possibilities are endless. We have also limited the spacing in the event and created a uniform size, 8’x8’, for all artists. We are also working with local hotels for those artists that need accommodations, so please indicate if you are in need of any accommodations on the application.
Eventually, we would like to transition this event into an educational experience for schools where school groups will compete with professional artists (i.e., several of you or your colleagues) judge their works so the Association can donate prize monies to the winning schools art programs.
