FARMERS SQUASH MERCATO
This time of year, and especially with this year's warm late-summer
weather, summer squash and winter squash are both filling stands
at the Little Italy farmers' market. Pumpkins are the fall season's most visible fruit, but butternut
is starting to turn up alongside the zucchini. Sauteed in red curry, sliced
and grilled, or cut into chunks and baked with a light drizzle of maple syrup,
squash makes a perfect side dish or a hearty meal.

SPEAKING OF SQUASH
If you can't wait until you get home from the market, Roots Fine Food will
add Butternut Squash Soup to their Mercato menu this weekend. Made using ingredients
from Little Italy market farmers Suzie's Farm and Sage Mountain Farms, this
luscious soup is topped with a sage puree and served with a slice of fresh
bread from Bread and Cie. Soup is good food!

OILING FAD
Whether you're using it to coat fresh eggplant for grilling, dress a salad,
or to dip a crusty piece of bread before dinner, fresh and tasty oils are as
varied as the foods they enhance. At the Mercato, we feature olive oils from
small producers in California and Italy, avocado oils pressed locally, and
our newest discovery: healthy grapeseed oils infused with roasted garlic, basil
or chili, available at Gourmet Delights' booth at the top of the market. Grapeseed
oil has a high smoke point and doesn't cloud when chilled, making it a favorite
of many local chefs.
