GRAB
COFFEE & A DONUT
Donut peach, that is. These are also sometimes called Saturn or Jupiter
peaches for their round, flattened shape, but we think "donut" describes
them perfectly. They're easy to hold, easy to eat and sweet and juicy right
now at Lone Oak Ranch and other Mercato farm booths. Stone fruits of all
kinds are in season, from peaches and nectarines to a wide variety of cherries,
all great for breakfast, snacks and desserts. So grab that donut (peach)
and a perfect cappuccino from Joes on the Nose or a steaming cup of Cove
Blend coffee from Cafe Virtuoso and get your morning started!

KNOBBY KOHLRABI
What's green or purple, hard and knobby and makes shoppers scratch their heads? Kohlrabi is in season now at the Little Italy farmers' market. Low calorie, high in fiber, and full of potassium, it has a mild flavor. Grate it like cabbage to add to a salad or make a great crunchy coleslaw, slice into thick chunks for dipping in Salmon Hummus from Omega Me Well, or sauté quickly with a little olive oil and garlic for a side dish that anyone who enjoys broccoli or asparagus will love. Small kohlrabi can be eaten whole; larger ones may need peeling as the skin toughens as it ages. And think of the fun you'll have watching your family guess what that is in your kitchen.

RHYTHM AND FOOD
David de Alva is back at the Mercato this week with his Flamenco guitar. We were expecting Luis Max and Blue Moon but Luis' day job needs him this weekend -- he's an attorney for the Mexican Consulate. And you thought he just played a mean guitar. We love David and we're delighted to have him back at Date & India providing our shopping soundtrack.
