veggie photoSALAD DAYS
Hot summer days call for fresh leafy lunches and dinners. Check out Santiago Soto's farm stand for mixed greens, and add ripe, red tomatoes from Kawano Farms and cucumbers and peppers from Sage Mountain Farms. For a heartier meal, slice a rotisseried chicken from Grill Master over a bed of greens, add some parmesan from Lisko Imports and Bread and Cie's crunchy croutons. Hail Caesar!

What do you want to see at the Little Italy Mercato? Email us at mercato@littleitalysd.com and give us your suggestions.

With the streets almost full, the Mercato has just a few booth spaces available and we're being very selective. Look for a few more farms, coming later this month. We're working hard to bring you locally grown meats and locally produced wine. Several restaurants will debut special Mercato menus by the end of August and our demo kitchen will provide opportunities for you to learn from local chefs how to make the most of the market's bounty.

SHOPPING FOR SUNDAY DINNER?
Nationally renowned chef Suzanne Goin, founder of restaurants Lucques (say “Luke”) and AOC in Los Angeles, has long been a proponent of locally grown and sustainable foods. Her book Sunday Suppers at Lucques, written by Goin with Teri Gelber, offers recipes arranged seasonally to use what's available at local farmers' markets. Look for recipes and a photo featuring our own Mercato farmer Peter Schaner when you pick up a copy at Schaner Farms' booth this Saturday.

Manny DANCE AND DINE
Manny Cepeda will be back this weekend with his Caribbean sounds, which always means shoppers dancing in the street. Grab a panini or crepe, a ripe nectarine from Lone Oak Farms and a lemonade from Polito Farms, and enjoy the music. Don't forget to slide a CD into your shopping bag. Musicians interested in playing at the Mercato can contact mercato@littleitalysd.com for more info.
